Upgrading to the Agent 2.X Version on Mac

Overview

Due to infrastructure changes, upgrading to DefensX Agent 2.X on Mac devices requires a manual upgrade. Future updates are expected to be more streamlined. If you have DefensX Agent version < 2.0.0, you must run a script or download the latest installer and double-click to install it.

In addition to upgrading the agent, users with devices not managed by an MDM need to accept the newly installed profiles.

For MDM-managed installations, no user interaction is needed but new configuration profiles should be updated in MDM as well.

This document details both upgrade processes.

Upgrading the Agent Version

To upgrade the agent on an already installed Mac device, download the latest version and run the installer. A deployment key is not needed for upgrades.

Alternatively, you can use the following command:

curl -f -s -L -J -o /tmp/DefensXInstaller-latest.pkg -O https://cloud.defensx.com/defensx-installer/latest.pkg && sudo installer -pkg /tmp/DefensXInstaller-latest.pkg -target /

Run this command in a terminal window, or create a script on MDM to execute it automatically on Mac devices.

Configuration Profiles

Configuration profiles manage both the DefensX Agent and browser extension settings.

MDM-Managed Installation

If the DefensX Agent is deployed through an MDM solution, you need to update the configuration profile in the MDM configuration as follows:

  • Log in to the DefensX Backend and switch to the specific customer account.

  • Navigate to the Policies page.

  • Click on the RMM icon for the specific deployment

  • Click on the Mac MDM button. If you are using Jamf Pro, select "Download mobileconfigs for Jamf Pro"; otherwise, select "Download mobileconfig [generic]."

  • Open the specific configuration profile in your MDM solution for the same customer and update the configuration with the newly downloaded file.

After updating the configuration profiles in the MDM, no user interaction is needed. The profiles will be automatically synchronized by the MDM solution.

Non-MDM Installation

If DefensX Agent was deployed manually without using MDM, the new configuration profiles will be installed automatically when the agent is upgraded to version 2.X. In this scenario, users must manually accept the new profile settings.

Note
 These changes do not need to be made simultaneously with the agent upgrade. If the agent is upgraded to version 2.X but the new configuration profiles are not yet accepted, everything should continue to work. However, it is recommended to accept the new profiles before August 2024 to ensure proper functionality of DefensX Browser Extensions.

You can access the new configuration profiles in Settings → Profiles on Mac.

The newly installed DefensX Policy will appear under the Downloaded section with an orange mark. To install the new profile, double-click on it and select the Install button at the bottom-left of the screen.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth transition to DefensX Agent 2.X on your Mac devices.
